Located in Mineral Wells Texas, the abandoned and posted Baker sits at the intersection of U.S. highways 281 and 180. The Baker was a resort hotel from 1929 through 1972. During that time many people visited the Baker for its mineral water, comfortable rooms, entertainment and conventions. Once a gathering place for everyday people—plus celebrities, politicians and business leaders—the hotel today is seeking new ownership and waiting for restoration.
Closed in 1972, the Baker has deteriorated and been vandalized. It is legally closed and posted. Abandoned first floor shops contain a few leftovers from their past, including an unwrapped red pop and a vacuum cleaner. The Baker is haunted—some say—with the spirits of people who died at the hotel. They roam the building from basement to tower. Neglect and vandalism work against the Baker. Perhaps the hotel will gain new life with people again coming to its rooms, dances, conventions and waters.
