Why no pictures of the people themselves? Respect for their beliefs. With some exceptions, the Amish of Holmes County believe it is vain to have their pictures made. The Amish canoe image was an exception. Just as the young man turned away to accommodate snapping the picture, the young girl in the back leaned forward in curiosity: no vanity meant, none taken.
